This role requires knowledge of federal, state, and local employment tax regulations, a strong grasp of payroll systems, and experience in handling complex employment tax issues. The ideal candidate will excel in applying technical tax concepts, managing audits, and optimizing processes to ensure compliance and mitigate risk.

Key Responsibilities

Employment Tax Compliance & Technical Oversight

  • Support and advise on multi-state payroll tax compliance, including determining nexus, allocation of wages, and state apportionment for remote and mobile employees.
  • Provide technical expertise on complex employment tax matters, such as taxable fringe benefits, deferred compensation, equity awards, and non-resident taxation.
  • Ensure compliance with FICA, FUTA, SUTA, and other federal and state tax obligations, addressing issues such as taxability of employer-provided benefits, payroll adjustments, and supplemental wage payments.

Strategic Employment Tax Planning

  • Develop and implement tax strategies to optimize employment tax efficiency and reduce overall payroll tax liabilities, including utilization of credits, incentives, and exemptions.
  • Conduct technical research and analysis of employment tax laws and regulations, including IRS guidance, revenue rulings, and court cases, to ensure proactive compliance.
  • Evaluate the employment tax implications of organizational changes, such as mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, or remote work policies.
  • Advise on the taxability and reporting of performance stock units (PSUs), restricted stock units (RSUs), and other equity-based compensation.
  • Assess and address the tax implications of global mobility, expatriate payroll, and foreign employee arrangements.

Audit Support & Risk Management

  • Act as the primary point of contact for federal, state, and local employment tax audits, providing detailed documentation and technical expertise to resolve issues efficiently.
  • Proactively identify and mitigate employment tax risks through internal controls, process improvements, and adherence to regulatory requirements.
  • Partner with external advisors to manage voluntary disclosure agreements (VDAs), refund claims, and penalty abatements.
  • Address issues related to improper classification of employees, imputed income, and severance pay taxation.

Technology & Process Optimization

  • Lead the integration and enhancement of payroll tax systems and software to improve reporting accuracy and efficiency, leveraging tools such as ADP, Alteryx, and Workday.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to automate tax processes, ensuring compliance with real-time reporting requirements.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Provide training and guidance to internal teams on technical employment tax issues.
  • Serve as a strategic advisor to leadership on employment tax trends and compliance strategies, translating technical tax concepts into actionable recommendations.
  • Collaborate with legal teams to address employment tax issues related to litigation, settlements, and workforce restructuring.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Tax, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in employment tax compliance and planning, with a focus on multi-state and federal payroll tax regulations.
  • Strong technical knowledge of employment tax laws.
  • Experience in payroll tax accounting, including ASC 718 (stock compensation).
  • Experience managing complex employment tax audits, resolving tax controversies, and negotiating favorable outcomes with federal and state tax authorities.
  • Strong analytical and research skills, with the ability to interpret and apply technical tax guidance to real-world scenarios.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical findings to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience in a large corporate environment with multi-jurisdictional payroll tax compliance.
  • Familiarity with global mobility programs and cross-border employment tax considerations.
  • Knowledge of emerging employment tax issues, such as real-time payroll reporting and taxation of digital nomads.
