JOB DUTIES
- Measures and accurately applies electrodes in a timely manner; performs routine, extended and continuous EEG procedures in the EMU or Neurosonology procedures in clinic and inpatient hospital settings. Educates patients and family using AIDET and appropriately utilizes methods designed to improve patient cooperation and comfort.
- Monitors patients hooked up for EEG testing in the EMU. Reports events to clinical staff and physicians. Works in accordance with the standards and protocols of the Neurodiagnostic Department and/or Neurosonology Lab.
- Provides technical descriptions of the EEG to support staff and nurses as they assess patients for comprehension and ability to cooperate during ictal and non-ictal events as assigned. Clearly documents and reports clinical and electrographic changes in a timely manner as outlined in policy.
- Reviews and edits routine, extended and continuous EEG files or Neurosonology procedures; utilizing appropriately neurodiagnostic nomenclature in describing electrographic abnormalities or concerning patterns. Prunes, clips and archives files as needed according to department policy.
- Demonstrates knowledge of neuroanatomy, physiology, basic electronics, electrical safety, instrumentation, pattern recognition, and various medical and pharmacological conditions that influence END and Neurosonology procedures. Applies methods to obtain optimal electrical recordings and actively identifies equipment limitations and problems related to patient care.
- Clearly documents a comprehensive patient history gathering appropriate information from the patient, the patient's record, and family members including neurolygical symptomology and medications. Able to assess situations, describe diagnostic testing information and interact with patients and family in critical settings and under stressful circumstances.
- Demonstrates the ability to access, navigate and document in multiple software applications (Nihon Kohden, Microsoft Office suites, Cadwell, Persyst, Remote Citrix, Epic, Peoplesoft, Neurosonology software systems). Provides accurate charge entry/verification routinely and maintains electronic communication consistently with appropriate staff through the designately channels.
- Learns to assist and perform additional and advanced Neurodiagnostic and Neurosonology Procedures by supervised practice with increasing independence. Required to participate in conferences or in-services, and independent study as outlined by department leaders.
- Verifies identity of patient and provides adequate patient ID on all studies. Ensures patient safety at all times. Keeps equipment clean and in working order. Troubleshoots equipment problems and repairs or reports to management promptly. Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate actions to take during an abnormal study or emergency situation. Ensures electrical safety to patients and staff.
- Rotates through on-call duties equitably and supports the EEG and EMU department or Neurosonology lab as assigned by Department leader. Willing and able to work on holidays, weekends, nights and swing shifts equally in the absence of scheduled staff in units, if needed.
- Orients new staff and students to work areas. Collaborates with other hospital employees to create an environment that is conducive to retention of qualified personnel. Utilizes downtime to assist others and/or to provide additional amenities to patients and/or patients' families.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
