Workers Compensation Underwriter

General Purpose:




This position is responsible for all areas of commercial agri-business underwriting, including risk selection and productivity. Responsibilities include identifying profitable business, through the underwriting process, including quoting, negotiating, binding and servicing commercial agriculture accounts. Collaborates with agency sales team and broker partners to better understand accounts and maximize sales results.




This position is not remote; it will be based in Syracuse, NY.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Underwrite commercial P&C risks with emphasis on Workers' Compensation exposures for farm and/or agribusiness operations; analyze and underwrite risks; assist in development of appropriate rating and endorsements to apply to each individual account; review coverage requests and determine if acceptable; underwriting includes industry and competitor analysis; new and renewal business
  • Profitably manage and grow an assigned underwriting territory
  • Serve as a resource for teammates when addressing technical underwriting issues related to commercial exposures that exist on farm and agribusiness risks
  • Meet servicing objectives established for quote turnaround, policy issuance, phone management, renewal management, file maintenance and documentation and technical data integrity for the underwriting system
  • Communicate regularly with agency sales team and broker partners throughout the underwriting process
  • Drive results and add value by providing oversight and guidance through risk consultations, audits, and analysis of financial results
  • Manage underwriting selection and reinsurance referrals. Monitor procedures and provide recommendations in methods, procedures, structures and additions or changes to obtain maximum utilization of resources
  • Assist in developing new underwriting tools and programs to improve renewal and new business workflows, as well as quoting, binding and servicing results
  • Collaborate and interact with Loss Control, Claims, Marketing, & the Call Center to create more efficient ways of doing business and ensure consistent communication to our members
  • Collaborate with Loss Control and Claims management staff to improve profit and efficiency while monitoring and/or reducing loss
  • Keep management informed verbally and in writing of activities and problems within assigned areas of responsibility; refer matters beyond limits of authority/expertise to manager for direction

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience

* Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Marketing/Finance or equivalent combination of education and experience

* Five to ten years of Workers' Compensation underwriting experience demonstrating technical expertise on coverage, forms and rating rules

* Certification and/or License - Must possess current P&C license or obtain within 90 days of employment; must perform required continuing education coursework to maintain license; must currently possess or work towards obtaining AFIS, CPCU and/or AU designations









Knowledge, Skills and Abilities






  • Understanding of general underwriting and rating procedures and practices for P&C lines of coverage


* Ability to efficiently manage own time, activities and resources; identify specific activities required to accomplish objectives, rank them in order of priority, coordinate and take action to achieve desired results

* Effective communication, interpersonal and presentation skills; ability to present ideas and information in a clear, concise, organized and diplomatic manner one-on-one and in team setting; listens to others to respond effectively to ideas

* Able to read, write, and speak English
