Overview

The Underwriting Manager will act as a liaison between Underwriting Staff, Operations, and the Product Management Organization. In this capacity, the manager will help to refine underwriting standards and develop best practices



Responsibilities

    Manage underwriting functions to achieve profit, revenue, loss ratio, and expense targets.
  • Ensure underwriting practices and guidelines are understood and adhered to, specifically focusing on risk selection, information integrity, proper classification, and quality analysis.
  • Review underwriting referrals to determine eligibility for new or renewal business accounts and handle agent escalations.
  • Assist other members of the underwriting and operations departments in product and technical knowledge.
  • Evaluate staff to identify skills and training needs; create opportunities to expand roles to match employee strengths or address opportunities
  • Provide both formal and informal feedback on a regular basis.
  • Develop staff of Underwriters through effective coaching and mentoring via performance evaluation, creation of development plans, and conducting technical training sessions.
  • Coordinate with Product Management team to create and maintain underwriting standards, criteria and procedures.
  • Identify when additional staff is needed, select, hire and training new underwriters.
  • Evaluate staff knowledge and efficiency by completing reviews, mentoring and promoting insurance education.
  • Allocating human resources, planning, project design and implementation.
  • Be willing and able to jump in and underwrite new or renewal business as needed.


Qualifications

Required:

  • 10+ years of P&C industry experience in Worker's Compensation, Businessowners or Commercial General Liability policies.
  • 8+ years supervisory /managerial experience and Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
  • High integrity and outstanding work ethic required
  • Demonstrated experience with and expert technical knowledge of commercial casualty insurance coverage and risk selection, methods and pricing.
  • Ability to make sound contributions to tactical and strategic planning
  • Travel up to 25% of the time within the assigned territory and to the Home Office as require

Preferred:

  • CPCU or CIC designation
  • Bachelor's degree in Insurance, Economics or Finance preferred
  • Strong expertise in the California workers' compensation market
