This is a manager level role supervising several technologist teams within MGB Neurology. The incumbent will have experience in at least one of the relevant diagnostic testing areas (electromyography testing or autonomic function testing), as the non-management components of the role are focused on diagnostic testing and direct patient care.
Working under the direction of the EMG Laboratory Administrative Directors, the incumbent manages the operations and staff of: MGH EMG Lab (4 technologists), BWH EMG Lab (2 technologists), and the MGB autonomic testing lab (1 technologist). This is a fully onsite role where the incumbent will split their time between the MGH and BWH campuses. In addition to management oversight responsibilities, this person will also spend 70-80% time performing diagnostic testing, which may include nerve conduction studies, autonomic function testing and duties to assist physicians in performing EMGs. The Chief technologist will provide management of equipment. This person is responsible for the overall management of the technologists, which includes but is not limited to hiring, performance appraisal, orientation and training, staffing schedules and assignments, standard operating procedures, technical and training activities, coaching and mentoring of existing staff, corrective action, and ongoing performance and quality assessment. The Chief Technologist will ensure and maintain a professional atmosphere within the laboratory at all times. They are also responsible for performing miscellaneous support duties. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: With input from the Lab and Administrative Directors, manages the interviewing and hiring processes when recruiting new technologists. Provides orientation and training to new hires, students and technologists. Directs the activities of the technical support staff, plans lab schedules, assigns priorities according to workload and clinical urgency. Monitors performance and provides corrective action as necessary. Serves as a role model for direct reports by modeling exceptional employee behavior. * Assist physicians in the performance of tests by preparing and assisting with anxious, uncooperative, or physically challenged patients. (i.e. changing of clothes, refreshments, warming of limbs, bathroom needs, electrode removal). * Works closely with the Lab and Administrative Directors to develop and maintain unit policies, programs, and procedures to maximize patient safety, unit efficiency and enhance the quality of service provided to patients. Develops, writes and updates the laboratory policy and procedure manual, utilizing and following OSHA and JCAHO guidelines. * Works closely with Administrative Director to monitor and manage budget, staffing, and department initiatives. Develops and proposes innovating strategies for improving lab quality and efficiency. Keeps track of weekly and monthly lab statistics. * Develops quality assurance and quality control programs. * Enter test results into computer database with a high degree of precision, accuracy and speed. * Reads study and enters billing as appropriate. * Maintains supplies and equipment for unit in conjunction with vendors, biomedical engineering, and the neurology Clinical Engineer. * Oversees inventory and supply ordering. Informs Administrative Director of needed special purchases and equipment. Oversees maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration, inspection and cleaning of unit equipment. Notifies Manager of needed repairs. Coordinates the scheduling and use of equipment. * Participates in the evaluation of new procedures and equipment by collecting and processing data. * Collaborate with physicians in research and assist in developing educational programs. * Submits and manage all relevant lab accreditations and maintenance of certification (for example AANEM accreditation). * Ensure the testing rooms are stocked, cleaned and any electrical/ computer issues are promptly addressed. * Ensure Joint Commission Standards and universal precautions are followed, and staff training is up to date, * Ensure fellows and technicians are promptly retrieving patients from the waiting room and placing into the exam rooms to begin EMG studies. * On occasion, may be required to assist with tasks outside of normal scheduled hours. QUALIFICATIONS: * High school diploma, or equivalent experience. Bachelor's degree preferred. SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: 1.
