Position Summary
The Adolescent and Young Adult Research (AYAR) team at the Center for Dissemination and Implementation Science (CDIS) at the University of Illinois Chicago is seeking a 50% Visiting Research Associate I. The Visiting Research Associate I will support the Legal, Economic, and Affirming Peer (LEAP) Support: A Status-Neutral Multicomponent Intervention to Improve HIV Prevention and Care Continua Outcomes Among Transgender and Gender Diverse (TGD) Youth project. This prospective randomized controlled trial (RCT) will examine the impact of LEAP on Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) prevention and care outcomes. The study will test the effectiveness of LEAP, an HIV status-neutral multicomponent intervention, designed to provide gender-affirming individualized HIV prevention and treatment peer support, address health-harming legal needs, and improve educational and employment outcomes for translation into real-world practice. The primary responsibility of this position will be to deliver one-on-one and group sessions to the target population, and assist with recruitment and retention, while maintaining study protocols.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Complete training regarding the program curriculum, research training for conducting research with human subjects, Community Health Worker (CHW) program, health insurance navigation, and other trainings as assigned.
  • Assist with community outreach and recruitment efforts.
  • Enroll participants in the study and support ongoing retention.
  • Deliver structured one and one and group sessions in-person and remotely.
  • Conduct the health-harming legal needs assessment and work with collaborating attorneys.
  • Maintain detailed records of activities.
  • Attend regular team meetings.
  • Represent LEAP at community meetings, events, and conferences.
  • Provide navigation assistance for community resources, health care and insurance access for LEAP participants and other agency clients.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in social science or related field required.
    • Candidate should have 2 plus years' experience working with transgender, nonbinary, and gender diverse youth and young adults of color, and demonstrated connections with agencies serving the LGBTQ+ community.
    • Excellent communication skills; ability to work independently; and a willingness to travel within site consortium jurisdiction and work occasional evenings and weekends when needed for program activities
