Position Summary

The faculty member shall be responsible for the following: teaching assigned classes under the supervision of the area dean; helping students fulfill their maximum potential in mastering course content; assessing student learning outcomes; maintaining a thorough and up-to-date knowledge in their regular teaching field; continuing professional development; utilizing current technology in the performance of job duties; maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position; assisting with articulation and curriculum development and review; serving on college committees and participating in faculty governance including accreditation and student co-curricular activities; assuming other responsibilities as assigned by the area dean; fulfilling other duties and responsibilities of a full-time faculty member.

The Department's primary focus is helping students develop good logical and critical reasoning skills to be able to participate in independent thought and open debate, and to learn valuable insights that can be applied to contemporary life. The Department focuses on a methodological grounding in core Analytic Philosophy, applied to a broad range of philosophical questions, issues, perspectives, and arguments found both within and outside of Western Philosophy's mainstream traditional approach.

The department seeks candidates with:

  • A commitment to the teaching of Philosophy with a focus on developing core critical thinking skills and the application of philosophical methods and theories to concrete, real-life issues.
  • A commitment to teaching Philosophy with an awareness and acknowledgment of contemporary scientific theories, research, and evidence.
  • The goal of developing students as evidence-guided, truth-seeking, rational agents who are committed to the open debate and public discourse required to enact positive change and progress in society.
  • Experience and a desire to continue engaging with research focused on the philosophical theories and perspectives traditionally excluded by the tradition, including but not limited to those excluded on the basis of race, gender, sexuality, culture, or religion.
  • A pedagogical theory and practice motivated by an evidence-based approach, with a strong focus on effective approaches to anti-racist, equitable teaching.
  • Experience working with Black, African American, Latinx, Native American, and other racial groups of students who have been historically under-resourced and under-represented in the classroom, and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes.
  • A willingness to examine and re-mediate one's instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support minoritized students.
  • Experience with, and skills for, addressing issues of equity in the classroom.
  • Experience and expertise in culturally responsive teaching.
  • A commitment to the personal work and professional development required to develop as an instructor, scholar, department colleague, and college member with a focus on equity and social justice.
  • A commitment to providing service that meets the needs of our diverse student body, who are diverse in many ways including, but not limited to, their race, socioeconomic status, culture, citizenship, gender, sexual orientation, ability, and religion.
  • Experience and commitment to working cooperatively, both intra- and interdepartmentally.

Position Salary Information:
Initial maximum salary placement is based on academic degree, upper/graduate level units earned, and/or related professional occupational experience per the Los Rios College Federation of Teachers Contract (the initial maximum placement is Class V, Step 8). Minimum Qualifications

  1. Have a master's degree, in Philosophy; OR a bachelor's in Philosophy AND a master's in Humanities or Religious Studies; OR hold a California Community College Instructor's Credential in the discipline area; OR the equivalent.*. All degrees must be from an accredited institution completed by the time of hire.
  2. Have an equity-minded focus, responsiveness, and sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities as it relates to differences in learning styles; and successfully foster and support an inclusive educational and employment environment.
