UCSF is a national leader in newborn care. Our children's hospital in San Francisco has a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) devoted to providing the most advanced care available to critically ill infants. As a certified level IV regional NICUs, we are capable of providing all levels of newborn care, from basic to most intensive, and draw patients from across the region. Our San Francisco location, the William H. Tooley Intensive Care Nursery, was among the first NICUs in the world.

The Nurse Practitioner is an independent member of the team, taking responsibility for the safe delivery of care for inpatient newborns.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Please note: An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Candidate cannot be a current UC employee. Candidate cannot have been employed by the University during the 12 months prior to the proposed rehire date. Candidate position classification cannot be Senior Management Group (SMG). Proposed candidate total case compensation offer must be below the Indexed Compensation Level (ICL) of $340,000 as of (9/1/2021). Candidate must meet any additional UC location eligibility requirements.

UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital is recognized throughout the world as a leader in health care, known for innovation, technology and compassionate care. UCSF has one of the top children's hospitals in the nation, according to a ranking by U.S. News & World Report. Our 180-bed UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital has more than 150 specialists in more than 40 areas of medicine.

Our neonatal heart program is one of the largest in the country, treating almost 200 newborns with heart disease each year. The ICN is a Regional Intensive Care Nursery and works with a network of 24 hospitals in Northern California to provide neonatology care.

Required Qualifications


  • Master's Degree in Nursing with a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner specialization
  • Minimum one (1) year recent NP experience in a level III or level IV Neonatal intensive Care Unit

Preferred Qualifications


  • Minimum three (3) years NNP experience in a level III or level IV Neonatal ICU
  • Completion of a NICU Fellowship as an NP

License/Certification


  • California driver's license (CDL) if required for position.
  • Current national certification from an accepted certifying agency and provide by first day of work.

  • Current and active RN and NP and Furnishing license in California.
  • Complete a BRN recognized graduate master's degree program as a nurse practitioner.
  • Obtain an active and/or transferable DEA license to California and provide evidence by 90th day of clinical practice. (It is the responsibility of the employee to transfer their DEA license to their new place of employment if from out of state, via online DEA portal and provide evidence of transfer).
  • Submit enrollment with CMS Medicare and Medicaid through credentialing by first clinical day. CCS enrollment as appropriate for pediatric environments.
  • Hold current AHA BLS.
  • Hold current AHA NRP.
  • State regulation requires that you have a supervising physician to practice.
  • Incumbents with less than 6 months of NP experience will be hired as a Nurse Practitioner 1.


UCSF Medical Center and Campus requires certain healthcare providers to be credentialed. In most cases this is done through its Office of Medical Affairs & Governance (OMAG) prior to the first working day. Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 60-90 days but can vary.
