Overview

The Health Care Payment & Quality Division within RTI International's Health Practice Area has an opening for a Research Economist. This person will assist in analyses of Medicare and other US government or state healthcare programs.

As a Research Economist, you will function as an integral part of a team supporting analytic activities and project coordination. The successful candidate will both work independently and support senior analysts on projects and proposals. The position requires strong oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams. Many opportunities for mentorship and professional development are available. Candidates with strong skills in quantitative analysis, evaluation, policy analysis, proposal and report writing, and project management are encouraged to apply.

This position can be either fully remote or based in any of RTI's U.S. offices in Research Triangle Park, NC; Waltham, MA; or Washington, DC. Teleworking is permitted only within the US.

Responsibilities

  • Support the implementation of government health care policies, programs, and regulations.
  • Analyze large, complex healthcare databases and policies. Specify and supervise analyses of large databases with professional programming staff and perform less-complex data and statistical analyses directly using MS Excel, R, SAS, STATA, Python, or other programming package.
  • Contribute to and/or prepare portions of technical memoranda, proposals, reports, and presentations.
  • Orally present (or participate in orally presenting) project results to clients.
  • Work effectively as part of a team of mixed levels of technical skills and experience, both mentoring and being mentored on project tasks.
  • Review and proof own and others' work for accuracy and completeness.
  • Write contract or grant proposal sections with moderate level of technical complexity and gather background information to support proposal efforts.
  • Contribute to business development by identifying new ways to enhance or expand existing tasks/projects.
  • Gain exposure to health care policy and health services research methods by attending internal RTI-sponsored presentations and learning seminars and job-related local workshops.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Economics, Health Care Policy, Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, Finance, Operations Research, or a related quantitative field with at least 6 years of relevant work experience; or a Bachelor's degree in those same fields with at least 8 years of relevant experience. A PhD with at least 1 year of relevant work experience will also be considered as equivalent experience.
  • Four or more years of work experience related to healthcare policy research.
  • Experience with statistical programming (SQL, R, or Python preferred).
  • Quantitative research experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and work in a team environment.
  • Strong attention to detail.
