Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The primary purpose of Cogeneration Systems is the generation of steam to the various buildings on the University campus and to the UNC Hospitals. Steam is critical to the operations of the University and UNC Hospitals. It is used for heating, cooling, domestic hot water, sterilization of surgical instrument, distilled water production, food preparation and dish washing. Cogeneration Systems also generates electricity as a byproduct of the steam generation. It can presently supply about 30 percent of the peak campus electrical load. Cogeneration Systems is part of UNC Energy Services.
Position Summary
The Environmental Compliance Coordinator provides environmental compliance reporting for the University with regards to local, state, and federal environmental laws and policies. This position oversees the regulatory compliance for Cogeneration Systems, Manning Drive Steam Plant and Landfill Gas Generator (examples: Title V Air Permit, Relative Accuracy Test Audit ( RADA), Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems ( CEMS) and Continuous Opacity Monitoring Systems ( COMS), 40 CFR60 Sub-Part Db quarterly reporting and monitoring Nitrogen Oxides (NOx).

Additional duties required of this position include stormwater regulation oversight, One Plan (Emergency Plan - Cogeneration) and Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure Plan ( SPCC) - Manning Drive Steam Plant. Should the Cogeneration and/or Steam Plants go down, it could jeopardize millions of dollars in lost research.

Position is to be conversant with Continuous Monitoring Systems ( CEMS) and Continuous Opacity Monitoring Systems ( COMS).

Position to be familiar with steam and electrical generating facility operations. Position is conversant with MAXIMO, a computerized work management system
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Four year degree with a preference for a related major in a physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology or closely related science; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require specific certifications or licenses. Specific jobs will require additional minimum training and/or licensing upon selection.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Physical-Chemical Grade II or higher certification is required for this position to serve as the DWQ required ORC.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Four year degree with a preference for a related major in a physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology or closely related science; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
