Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Building Services provide full maintenance and repair services for all UNC facilities and ensure the proper operation of those facilities in support of the UNC mission of teaching, research and public service. Building Services supports more than 400 campus buildings with approximately 18 million gross square feet of space. The teams that provide quality maintenance, repair and construction services that support the teaching, research, and public service mission of the University include Campus Maintenance, EMCS, Facilities Operations Support, Housing Support, HVAC Systems, and Life Safety Services. Campus Maintenance operates, maintains and improves the physical environment of the University through a complete line of shop services that include carpentry, electrical, plumbing, masonry, insulation, preventive maintenance and special laboratory equipment repair.
Position Summary
A SIGN-ON BONUS OF $4,081 IS AVAILABLE FOR THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT OF THIS POSITION PAID IN 2 INSTALLMENTS WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF HIRE:
$2,040.50 WITHIN 30 DAYS OF HIRE DATE & $2,040.50 12 MONTHS AFTER HIRE DATE.

This recruitment is for two (2) Facility Maintenance Technician - Bldg Trades- Journey positions (00061907, 00032605). By applying, you will be considered for both positions.


Makes roofing and carpentry repairs and installations, and performs preventive maintenance on all campus buildings. Repair/replace historical building components with original matching materials. Water test, replace and repair roof drains, internal downspout pipes, overflow pipe systems, storm water drains, and water collection systems. Remove replace insulation, asbestos, glazing and lead paint from pipes, windows and other exterior building components. Test, inspect and service fall protection cable / anchor systems, lightning rod and cable systems, mechanical roof and smoke hatches. Operate heavy machinery such as boomlifts, dump trucks, loaders and forklifts.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Knowledge of all types of roofing; ability to make repairs on windows, boxing and exterior trim.

Valid North Carolina Driver's License or ability to obtain one prior to start date.

Ability to serve as a mandatory employee and report to work in support of mandatory University operations, even when adverse weather or other emergency conditions, including but not limited to a public health emergency, may require the University to close.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Progressive roofing experience and a good knowledge of carpentry repair. Experience with metal fabrication for flashing, downspouts and gutters, soldering, waterproofing and drains, and operation of boom and lifts also preferred.

Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Ability to move objects in excess of 50 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodation, work from tall ladders and scaffolds in excess of 60 ft.; and work on hands and knees or with hands overhead for extended periods of time.

**ELIGIBILITY FOR SIGN-ON BONUS

The selected candidate for this position may be eligible for a sign-on bonus. Qualified applicants must apply and be selected from the candidate pool of this posting and meet the State policy following requirements:

To be eligible for a Sign-on bonus, an individual must not have worked in a probationary, permanent, or time-limited appointment in the last 12 months as an employee in North Carolina state government, including but not limited to the judicial system, state executive branch agencies, and the university system in a position subject to the State Human Resources Act.

A newly hired permanent full time or permanent part-time (more than 20 hours a week) employee are eligible for a sign-on bonus (this will be prorated for employees working more than 20 hours and less than 40 hours per week).
