Position description

Associate/Full Specialist - UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center

The candidate will report to the PTC Manager and will work closely with the other members of the PTC team in preclinical study execution.

Specific tasks will include:



  • Understanding of experimental study designs and goals.
  • Training and execution of preclinical experimental techniques including administration of substances through various routes (intra-venous, intra-peritoneal, oral gavage), tumor implantation, body weight and tumor size measurement, tumor and tissue collection.
  • Collection of biosamples, such as blood or tissue in the course of PK, PD, drug tolerability and anti-tumor drug efficacy studies.
  • Ability to perform small animal surgeries, including PDX implantation and survival surgeries (IC, MFP, IH).
  • Performance of basic laboratory methods required for formulation of drugs and vehicle for in vivo delivery.
  • Sterile propagation of cells in culture, freezing and thawing of cell lines
  • Generation and culture of Patient-Derived-Organoids.
  • Familiarity with and use of cutting edge, rodent-based molecular imaging and irradiator instruments including optical uCT imaging and X-ray devices.
  • Record keeping (lab book, chemical and CS inventories, use of StudyLog software) and data base management (repositories of tissue samples, collection of matching clinical/patient information).
  • Clients' management (sending weekly data updates to clients, arranging and participating to clients' meetings, organizing outreach activities to promote the core visibilities within UCSF).
  • Project management (arranging weekly and daily working schedule, deal with sudden/unexpected changes to experimental plan, planning training schedules).


This position will be appointed at the Associate or Full Specialist level, dependent on academic qualification, relevant experience and skill set.

Required Qualifications:



  • Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must possess a master's degree (or equivalent degree) or must have five to ten years of experience in the relevant specialization.
  • Specialist appointed at the Full rank must possess a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or must have at least ten or more years of experience in the relevant specialization.
  • Must be able to work in a fast paced and vibrant scientific research community, while acquiring specialized skills.
  • Self-motivated, has problem solving skills and the ability to think critically.
  • Proactive, able to work independently and willing to take on new challenge.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, capable to work at high standard and under deadlines.
  • Detailed orientated, able to critically analyze and present data.
  • Able to effectively manage daily activities as well as multiple long-term projects simultaneously.
  • Willing to be trained in imaging techniques, once mastering them, able to offer training to clients.
  • Must be able to work well within a team, to multi-task and prioritize, and be willing to work flexible hours, including occasional weekends/holidays based on rotation.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Animal experience is essential, proficiency in surgical procedures is a plus.
  • Hands on in vivo imaging techniques and/or PDO working experience is required.
  • The ideal candidate will have a strong scientific background (PhD/postdoc), with 5-8 years of experience in oncological research.
