Unit Overview The Student Success Center (
SSC) is a unit of the College of Engineering and Technology. The
CET offers nine undergraduate and nine graduate degree programs in four academic departments: Computer Science, Construction Management, Engineering, and Technology Systems. The
SSC supports the four departments and collaborates with other partners within and outside
ECU to fulfill our collective vision and mission - to be a
student-centered college that delivers a
relationship-rich education to every student in every
CET degree program. "Student-centered" means that the college's 130+ full-time faculty and staff put students first in our teaching, research, and service efforts, ensuring that
CET programs deliver the greatest possible educational value to each student.
The
SSC helps departments, faculty, and staff deliver the "ABCs" of educational value: Academic program excellence, Beyond-the-classroom experiential learning, and Career exploration and development. Specifically, the
SSC collaborates with departments to serve students by providing academic advising services; coordinating and/or collaborating on strategic initiatives that promote student engagement and build community; and helping students discover and navigate their unique academic/career pathway through career and professional development programming. The
SSC also supports marketing, outreach, recruiting, and engagement (
MORE) programs, collaborating with departments to communicate our value proposition to prospective students, families, and their communities. In this regard, the
SSC serves an essential collaborator and facilitator for implementation of the college's Strategic Plan. |
Job Duties |

The College of Engineering and Technology (
CET) at East Carolina University (
ECU) seeks an Associate Dean for Student Affairs (
ADSA) with primary duties as Director of the
CET Student Success Center. This position is open to
CET faculty members. The successful candidate will receive a twelve-month appointment with administrative stipend.
ADSA duties will require 0.60 to 0.70
FTE reassigned time for administrative service with teaching and scholarly duties occupying the remaining 0.30 to 0.40
FTE.
Position Overview:
The
ADSA will serve as director of the Student Success Center for the College of Engineering and Technology. The
ADSA serves as a member of the
CET Leadership Council and reports to the Dean of the College of Engineering and Technology. The
ADSA ensures
SSC collaboration and coordination (with departments, faculty and other campus partners) of advising, student engagement initiatives, and career development programs to advance the student-success related strategic initiatives. The daily responsibilities of the role include managing collaborations and coordinating advising and student success programs, supervising staff, managing the
SSC budget, and carrying a limited load of academic advising. Occasional evening, weekend work, and travel are required.
As a faculty position with reassigned time for administrative service, teaching and scholarly activities will continue to be a part of the job responsibilities. The percentages of effort assigned to each area, and the work plans within each area, will be determined by the dean in consultation with the home department chair. Reassigned time for administrative service will comprise a minimum of 60% of the position
FTE.
ADSA Duties and Responsibilities
1. Leadership & Supervision (30%)
Lead a High-Performing Team: Provide direction and support to SSC staff, setting clear expectations for performance, professional development, and accountability. Conduct regular performance evaluations and facilitate professional development opportunities for staff to help them gain new skills and grow in their roles. Establish Clear Goals & Objectives: Work with SSC staff to set measurable goals aligned with the College's vision for student success and Strategic Plan metrics. Regularly review and adjust these goals, ensuring continuous improvement and responsiveness to student needs. Promote a Collaborative and Safe Culture: Foster a team culture of collaboration, inclusion, and open communication. Lead regular staff meetings to share updates, solve challenges, and encourage cross-functional teamwork. Develop standard protocols for internal conflict resolution. Ensure staff are motivated and equipped to succeed. Budget & Resource Management: Oversee the SSC budget, ensuring funds are allocated effectively to maximize impact on student success programs. Provide transparent budget reporting and work with college administration to secure additional resources as necessary. Data-Informed Leadership: Use data to guide decision-making and track the effectiveness of programs and initiatives. Regularly analyze student success metrics (retention rates, graduation rates, etc.) and use this information to inform staff activities, adjust programs, and demonstrate success. Continuous Improvement: Evaluate and revise SSC processes to improve efficiency, student outcomes, and staff satisfaction. Implement best practices in student services and stay updated on trends in higher education to keep the SSC innovative and relevant.
2. Student Success Programming (25%)
Develop and Enhance Programs: Coordinate and/or collaborate with departments on the design, implementation, and assessment of student success initiatives such as advising, mentoring, coaching, beyond-the-classroom engagement (all forms of experiential learning, especially high-impact practices), and career exploration and development programs. Ensure programs have measurable outcomes, and regularly collect student feedback to guide improvements. Outreach & Recruitment: Provide leadership, support, and strategic direction for the MORE Associate Director to develop, in collaboration with departments, a comprehensive, data-driven recruitment plan, targeting key high schools, community colleges, and other prospective student sources. Set measurable goals for enrollment growth and student diversity. Provide oversight to ensure these goals are being met. Onboarding & Transitions: Provide leadership, support, and strategic direction for the Associate Director for First-Year and Transition Programs to collaborate with departments to develop program-focused onboarding and engagement programs like summer orientation, program-based first-year and transition programs, and living-learning communities. Work with departments to set metrics for success (e.g., first-year retention rates) and program improvement based on data and student feedback. Career & Leadership Development: Collaborate with college leadership and departments to expand student utilization of the Career Development and Leadership Center (CDLC), a unit of the SSC. Coordinate efforts to develop and execute CDLC programs to expand student engagement in career exploration, career development, and professional development. Collaborate with Career Services to organize industry career fairs, workshops, and networking events. Collaborate with departments to develop leadership development opportunities for students through clubs, organizations, and mentorship. Evaluate the impact of these programs by tracking job placement rates and leadership participation. Event Planning: Coordinate and/or lead the planning and execution of college-wide student-focused events including the college's graduate recognition ceremony, the Robert & Betty Hill Recognition of Excellence Award Ceremony, and other events. Ensure all events are well-organized, align with student success goals, and provide opportunities for students to be celebrated and supported.
3. Strategic Initiatives & Collaboration (25%)
Drive Strategic Projects: Coordinate and lead the planning and execution of cross-departmental projects that align with the College's strategic goals. Collaborate with the Assistant Director for Student Success Management Systems to set specific milestones, timelines, and deliverables for each project, ensuring they contribute to measurable improvements in student success. Build Interdepartmental Relationships: Build and maintain strong working relationships with CET departments and faculty, university departments (e.g., Career Services, Academic Advising), and external partners (industry, STEM East). Leverage these relationships to enhance student programming and expand opportunities for students. Coordinate regular meetings with key stakeholders to align on priorities and address challenges.
4. Academic Policy & Guidance (10%)
Interpret and Implement Academic Policies: Serve as a key advisor to the College on student-related policies. Regularly review university policies and communicate their implications clearly to students and staff, ensuring compliance and clarity. Provide Expert Academic Guidance: Provide leadership, support, and direction to the Associate Director of Academic Advising to ensure close collaboration with departments and academic programs, ensuring that advisors provide consistent academic guidance and ensuring students understand policies related to academic standing, probation, and progression. Establish clear processes for advising students on policy-related issues and resolve disputes when necessary. Provide Direct Advising: Serve as the primary academic advisor for a select group of students, guiding them through their academic journey from enrollment to graduation.
5. Communications & Outreach (10%)
Develop a Communication Plan: Create a comprehensive communication strategy to ensure that the college's academic programs, strategic initiatives, and achievements are sufficiently publicized to students, faculty, CET and ECU academic leaders, and external stakeholders with consistent messaging using appropriate modalities. Use various platforms, including websites, social media, email, and in-person events, to share key information. Regularly review these communications to ensure they accurately reflect the SSC's mission and student success goals. Engage with Stakeholders: Serve as the primary spokesperson for the SSC, providing updates to and soliciting suggestions from the Dean and the CET Leadership Council. Ensure timely and effective communication with faculty, staff, students, and external partners. Participate in and lead university-wide student success initiatives.

Education: Terminal degree in a STEM discipline represented in the college. Experience: At least four years of work experience as a faculty member (EHRA Faculty) in the College of Engineering & Technology.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education |
Experience: At least six years of work experience as a faculty member in the College of Engineering & Technology with teaching, research, and service experience meriting tenure at the rank of associate professor or professor. Experience in developing student success programs: A record of accomplishments, beyond normal department service, demonstrating active engagement in the scholarship of student success (e.g., career coaching, motivating engagement in high impact practices, holistic advising). This record may include (but is not limited to) publications, conference presentations, grant proposals, externally funded awards. Management and Leadership Experience: At least two years, and preferably four or more years of management and leadership experience in higher education focused on student affairs, student success management, academic advising, career development, etc.- Ability to analyze and present data related to student success metrics, along with strong relationship-building skills within and beyond the College.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
- Proven ability to lead teams and manage multiple priorities.
- Familiarity with student success management processes, systems and software applications.
