JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

A research technologist position is immediately available in the Mnatsakanyan lab at the Penn State College of Medicine, in Hershey, PA, to study metabolism, mitochondrial function and cell death mechanisms in neurodegenerative diseases. The candidate will work on an integrated research project combining structural (cryo-electron microscopy and tomography) and electrophysiology (patch-clamp and planar lipid bilayer recordings) approaches to study the mitochondria-mediated cell death pathways in cancer, aging and Alzheimer's disease pathogenesis. The candidate will specifically be involved in large-scale protein purification, animal breeding, genotyping, mitochondria isolation and other procedures.

  • Perform experiments for recombinant protein overexpression and purification from different prokaryotic and eukaryotic hosts. Effectively use different protein purification techniques (affinity chromatography, size exclusion chromatography etc.).

  • Maintain the animal colonies of Alzheimer's disease mouse models by performing routine animal breeding and genotyping procedures.

  • Perform mitochondria isolation from different animal tissues (heart, brain, liver) and eukaryotic cell cultures (insect and mammalian cell lines). Perform routine isolation of primary neuronal cultures (hippocampal and cortical) from mice.

  • Perform DNA/RNA isolation, Western blots, Blue Native PAGE.

  • Order reagents and supplies for the lab. Supervise undergraduate and graduate students in the lab. Keep accurate record of laboratory procedures and research data in laboratory notebooks.

Minimum Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • No prior relevant work experience required

  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience

This is a limited-term position funded for one year from date of hire, withpossibility of refunding.

  • Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Criminal Background Check

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$34,800.00 - $50,500.00
