Job Description

With minimal supervision, performs the most difficult and complex inspection tasks, including assessing adherence to quality control procedures. Inspects various facets of work on the jobsite and performs continuous surveillance of assigned inspection activities to ensure compliance with all applicable codes, standards, and specifications. Documents nonconformance and participates in determining appropriate resolution. Inspection activities are usually concentrated in one or more of the following areas: soils, concrete, asphalt, utilities, architectural, steel, mechanical, or electrical. Frequently serves in the capacity of Lead Inspector. Willingness to travel and/or to relocate to fi eld sites is expected. Performs work in safe manner and is cognizant of public safety.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

    Conducts inspections to determine if work has been done in accordance with contract specifications, including but not limited to:
    • Demolition of transportation facilities (airports, roads, streets, bridges etc.).
    • Construction of buildings, roads, bridges, and other associated improvements (curb and gutter, street, sidewalk, landscaping).
    • Drainage work, traffic control, compliance with SWPPP requirements.
    • Installation of electrical equipment related to traffic signals, ramp metering and street lighting.
    • Irrigation and planting, roadway and overhead sign removal and installation.
    • Installation of temporary and permanent signs and delineation.
    • Installation of mechanical equipment.
    • Building and facility construction and associated site development.
  • Takes project photographs daily and filing them.
  • Maintains office files related to the project, quantity calculations and writes daily diaries.
  • Prepares daily reports and other documentation, as required by contract.
  • Verifies that only approved materials are incorporated in the work.
  • Maintains as-built plans.
  • Recognizes potential conflicts, issues and problems, and reports to supervisor with proposed solution.
  • Collects, reviews and files Certificate of Compliance, MSDS, inspection tags and other information relevant to the materials used.
  • Provides technical guidance and delegates responsibilities as appropriate to lower-level inspectors.
  • Coordinates work of subconsultants for surveying and material testing.
  • Recommends job safety practices and drafts safety reports.
  • Prepares quality control reports and recommends changes to procedures.
  • Reports on installed quantities to verify applications for payment and change order work.
  • Responds to the call backs in case of emergency at the project site.
  • May administer welder qualification tests.
  • Performs other responsibilities associated with this position as may be appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associates degree in a technical discipline or construction-related field, or a high school diploma and equivalent work experience, is required.
  • Requires 10+ years of related inspection experience on field projects.
  • Requires formal certification from an independent organization, preferably International Building Code (IBC), or Division of the State Architect (DSA) or Office of Statewide Hospital Planning and Development (OSHPD) or equivalent, depending on type of inspection assignment.
  • Knowledge of California Building Code (CBC) and accessibility standards.
  • Some knowledge of public works contracts is preferred. Aviation/airport capital improvement project experience is desired but not required.
  • Construction safety training including Cal OSHA 10-hour training.
  • Must be able to read and interpret plans and specifications, be totally familiar with construction-related processes related to area of assignment and have the potential to perform in a lead capacity.
  • Capability to perform math calculation to prepare engineering calculations, graphs, and charts.
  • Proficiency with basic computer usage, extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office, Project Management Software, and internet search engines (like Google or equivalent) required.
  • Must have thorough understanding of scheduling, and the ability to re-view progress pay estimates and extra work bills.
  • Knowledge of English grammar and composition, the ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing; to follow oral and written instructions and prepare written messages and reports.
  • Ability to comply with multitude of requirements as applicable to the project based on client and industry standards.
  • Must be able to recognize hazardous work conditions and take action if necessary.
  • Ability to use good judgment and work with others is required.
  • Requires ability to climb ladders, inspect work above ground, and work in confined spaces.
  • Requires ability to lift to 50 lbs. (i.e. lifting materials used for testing of concrete, AC, etc.).

Offered rate of compensation will be based on a variety of non-discriminatory factors, including education, qualifications, experience, and geographic location. Hourly rate, per CA DIR General Prevailing Wage Determinations. May be in the range of $43.09 to $94.24 per hour.
