Your role and responsibilities

Communications is a crucial function to our success. As Country Communications Leader for the U.S. you are responsible for ensuring a positive brand perception and protecting the reputation of ABB in country. You will be the primary spokesperson for ABB and lead Tier 1 and U.S. business media relations as well as being a member of the crisis and issues management team.
We are looking for a highly collaborative leader who can work across the communications team, our U.S functions, and the business and is skilled in managing a highly matrixed organization. The ability to set clear and challenging goals, tenacious and accountable in driving results. This person will need to be comfortable with ambiguity and uncertainty; the ability to adapt nimbly and lead others through complex situations. Possesses the ability to act in a transparent and consistent manner while always considering what is best for the organization.
This role is targeting folks who are capable of working a hybrid schedule (#LI-Remote) from our Cary, NC office, with exceptions for others in the Eastern and Central Timezones at a major ABB hub.
Key Responsibilities of this role include:
- Media and PR: Working with division communicators and country business leaders, develop external communication plans that position ABB positively with key audiences and actively contributes to the business strategy for profitable growth. This includes thought leadership, traditional & social media. Proactively engage with and act as a spokesperson for country Tier 1 and country business media. Support key leaders with media guidance, coaching and speaking opportunities. Localize and distribute global PR messages. Plan, support, prepare and manage responses to positive and negative inquiries from external sources - including crisis and issue-related media and social media escalations and responses.
- Issues Management and Crisis Communications: Serve on the country crisis task force. Offer guidance regarding crises and issues in line with ABB's operational model. Ensure all internal issues and crises are handled with minimum negative impact to the organization and the ABB brand.
- Leadership: Proven ability to lead and motivate teams helping them to remain focused on key priorities, providing clear direction, delegating, actively communicating and coaching/mentoring. Ability to lead and influence from a distance in a matrix organization is key. Hands-on leadership skills with a pragmatic business-focused approach to the delivery projects alike, being decisive and action-oriented, within areas of responsibility.
- Internal communications: Responsible for internal communications duties, including mandatory employee communications and fiduciary requirements locally. Manage cascading of ABB Corporate content. Provides strategic guidance to key functions including the CHO, legal and integrity, HSE, HR and security in line with the ABB Way. Management and governance of country internal communication channels such as Viva Engage and the intranet. Support communications related to ABB's D&I efforts and manage communications related to ABB's ERGs (Employee Resource Groups) in the U.S.
- Digital Communications and Social Media: Management and governance of country digital channels.
- Brand and Reputation: Safeguard brand identity and ensure regulatory compliance in all communications, both internally and externally. Lead ABB's efforts in the community in key locations and communications related to the ABB Foundation. Partner with the CHO, HR and local leadership to build communications positioning ABB as an employer of choice in the U.S.

Qualifications for the role
  • - Undergraduate degree, or higher, in Marketing, PR or other relevant discipline
  • - 10 years' experience in Marketing, Communication Management or Public Relations in a highly matrixed organization
  • - Previous industrial (or related) industry experience strongly preferred
  • - Fluency in English (written and spoken) and strong writing/editing skills
  • - In-depth demonstrable knowledge and experience of all aspects of internal and external communications
  • - Extensive network within the press/media and ability lead crisis communications autonomously
  • - Strong Business partnership, collaboration and communication skills, with deep experience of managing internal and external relationships seamlessly
