DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this role, you will support park personnel in a variety of initiatives while acquiring valuable experience in Park Operations, Resource Management, Administration, and Environmental Education. Your responsibilities will include collaborating with park staff to learn how to implement a maintenance program that ensures the proper upkeep of park grounds, structures, facilities, and equipment. You will also assist in recreational and educational activities within the park to maximize the use of available facilities.

You will engage with visitors through daily interactions and at event booths, providing exceptional customer service to create a memorable experience. Additionally, you will gain insight into how staff participate in law enforcement activities, applying the Crimes Code, Vehicle Code, and Fish and Game laws relevant to State Parks. Working alongside park staff, you will learn to manage the park's natural resources, which involves preparing, maintaining, and adhering to resource management plans.

Your collaboration with park staff will extend to interpreting and applying statewide operational rules, regulations, and policies. You will contribute ideas for developing and presenting operating policies, standards, and guidelines to effectively manage local park operations. Furthermore, you will assist in drafting letters, reports, and correspondence as needed, and help prepare press releases to inform the public about park activities, programs, schedules, and special events.

You will also support special events and work alongside volunteers, as well as assist Environmental Education staff with recreational and environmental education programs. It is essential to wear personal protective equipment when required and operate a state vehicle to travel from the work headquarters to various parks as necessary. Additionally, you may be called upon to undertake other special project work as needed.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time internship that will last from 5/1/2025 through 8/29/2025.
  • Work Hours for Internship: 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday. (Schedule may vary, weekends and holidays may be worked).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Internship Requirements:

  • Current full-time enrollment in a two-year degree, bachelor's degree or advanced degree program in one of the following acceptable majors:
    • Horticulture
    • GIS
    • Environmental Education
  • An approved major course which includes a qualifying 24 credit hours of study in the physical, biological and environmental sciences may be acceptable.
  • Freshman year completed.
  • Good academic standing (2.0 GPA or higher)
  • Pennsylvania residency or enrollment at a Pennsylvania college or university
  • Additional Requirements:

    • This position requires possession of a valid Class C non-commercial driver's license.
    • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
