DESCRIPTION OF WORK

Our Keystone Summer Internship Program is designed to provide preprofessional training to students interested in pursuing a career in history, historic preservation, or museums. We created this program to be an integral part of our interns' academic training, and students are encouraged to seek credit. Each Keystone Summer Intern will work directly with a PHMC staff mentor on a specific project or projects and will also learn about PHMC's multiple functions though educational and networking opportunities. Interns will also have regular opportunities to reflect on their own experiences within the broader context of the challenges and possibilities of public history. Keystone interns will receive a formal evaluation at the conclusion of the internship and will be asked to provide feedback to PHMC on their experience. As a Keystone Intern for the State Museum of Pennsylvania, you may expect to:
- Assist with prep, set-up, and presentation of programming.
- Lead interactive school tours and programs.
- Design new interactive elements and educational materials (games, assignments, activities, etc.) for museum educators to incorporate into future programming.
- Creatively and collaboratively with the Education team, develop concepts for new resources and programs.
- The intern will spend time with visitors and evaluate their experiences. Research the latest museum education trends. Create and implement hands-on activities for visitors.
- Assist with inventorying hands-on collection.
- Participate in the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission's Internship Program to gain knowledge of the variety of programs offered at the Commission as well as collaborating with fellow interns.
Work Schedule and Additional Information:
- This is a 10-week internship, running between May 2025 through August 2025, totaling approximately 225-300 hours.
- Work hours are flexible and will be finalized between selected interns and their supervisor.
- Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS Internship Requirements:
- All applicants must be enrolled at a college or university in an undergraduate or graduate program, at the time of their internship.
Additional Requirements:
- You must be able and willing to report to Harrisburg, PA during the Summer Keystone Internship dates, which will be a 10-week period between May 12 and August 22, 2025.
- You must be working towards a degree in Education, Museum Education, Museum Studies, or a closely related subject.
- You must have experience working with the general public.
- You must be able to perform essential job functions.
Preferred Qualifications (not required):
- Experience or training in program creation and evaluation.
- Work, academic, or volunteer experience that has prepared you for this internship.
- An understanding of how this internship will help you meet your academic and/or career goals.
Legal Requirements:
- This position falls under the provisions of the Child Protective Services Law.
- Under the Law, a conditional offer of employment will require submission and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports including, but not limited to, PA State Police clearance, PA Child Abuse history clearance, and FBI Fingerprint clearance.
