DESCRIPTION OF WORK

The Education and Collections Internship will work in the Education, Visitor Services, and Collections Departments of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania's main exhibits include approximately 100 pieces of railroad equipment in addition to expansive archives and collections. During work periods in Collections and Archives, the intern will work with the Museum Curator to learn proper handling of objects, collections care, and assist in creating inventories of archival and collections material in the museum's online database. The intern may also have the opportunity to assist with research questions.

The chosen candidate will work with the Education and Visitor Services Departments in interpretation of collections in Rolling Stock Hall, conduct Education Programs, and assist with the Barons and Builders Summer Camp. Effective communication skills are a must as the candidate will be expected to work with the public. Applicants should expect to assist in the interpretation of rolling stock and working in the summer camp program at least 50% of the internship hours. By the end of the internship period, the candidate will develop a special project based on academic interests and goals, with the guidance of their mentors.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • 10-week internship, May 2025 through August 2025, approximately 225 to 300 hours
  • Work hours are flexible and will be finalized between the selected intern and their supervisor
  • Salary: $17.00 per hour

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Internship Requirements:

  • All applicants must be enrolled at a college or university in an undergraduate or graduate program at the time of their internship.

Additional Requirements:

  • You must be able and willing to report to Strasburg, Pennsylvania during the Summer Keystone Internship dates, which will be a 10-week period between of May 12 and August 22, 2025.
  • You must currently be majoring, minoring, or have a concentration in History, Anthropology, Education, Museum Studies, or a closely related subject.
  • You must have a GPA of 2.5 or above.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Preferred Qualifications (not required):

  • Customer service experience, experience working with the public, and comfort interacting with the public, or a willingness to work toward this goal
  • Work, academic, or volunteer experience that has prepared you for this internship
  • An understanding of how this internship will help you meet your academic and/or career goals

Legal Requirements:

  • This position falls under the provisions of the Child Protective Services Law.
    • Under the Law, a conditional offer of employment will require submission and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports including, but not limited to, PA State Police clearance, PA Child Abuse history clearance, and FBI Fingerprint clearance.
