Department: Educ Northwestern Academy Salary/Grade: EXS/7 Morton Schapiro Northwestern Academy Advisor The Morton Schapiro Northwestern Academy in the School of Education and Social Policy is a multi-year college preparation and enrichment program for academically talented and motivated high school students in Chicago Public Schools (CPS). The goal is to increase access and successful matriculation of underrepresented and talented CPS high school students to top-tier colleges and universities by providing college preparatory programming, academic support, enrichment, and by nurturing aspirations. The Academy Advisor will guide and coach Academy students throughout high school, providing one-on-one and small group advising, assisting students' goal setting and developing short- and long-term academic plans, monitoring academic progress, and working with them and their families to navigate educational resources and opportunities. Please Note: Position requires frequent attendance at off-hours meetings, conferences, and events, as well as occasional overnight travel. Specific Responsibilities:
- Provide one-on-one and small group academic advising on course selection, admissions preparation, standardized testing, financial aid, the identification of appropriate match highly selective college and universities, and on enrichment opportunities.
- Assist students in developing objectives and methods to meet short and long-term academic and personal goals for high school and post-secondary plans. Work with students to identify and implement enrichment experiences demonstrating academic rigor, and cultural and civic engagement. Collaborate with students and families to navigate educational resources and opportunities. Facilitate annual individual and parent/guardian meetings. Monitor students' academic progress through personal contact with students, parents, and high school personnel.
- Develop, manage, and facilitate group programming in college prep and self-regulation learning, social-emotional content workshops. Develop and facilitate parent/guardian college prep and transition workshops. Plan and chaperone enrichment field experiences.
- Support students' target college search, application, and selection process. Write letters of recommendation for selective pre-college programs and college admission applications. Is knowledgeable of the college advising process (researching, applying, selecting, and transitioning) and admissions requirements for nationally known colleges and universities, financial aid options, and possible barriers for underrepresented and first-generation college bound students as related to admission and retention. Assist with college application forms and essay writing, and direct students in the appropriate technology in the college admissions processes. Plan and chaperone college campus visits.
- Collect and maintain student academic data, demographic data, history, and anecdotal documentation. Prepare reports and analyses as needed.
- Collaborate with the program director to develop programming, review and evaluate programs to assess efficacy and design, and implement improvements as needed.
- Assist in the recruitment, selection, and orientation process for new students. Help plan, attend, and staff Academy events.
- Build and maintain partnerships and institutional relationships, serving as liaison to Chicago Public Schools communities, families, partner organizations and non-profits, members of the Northwestern University community, and college admissions professionals.
- Engage in professional development to maintain and/or develop skills assuring knowledge of research and best practices around college access issues is up-to-date.
Targeted salary range: $65,000-$78,000 Miscellaneous
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in education, school counseling, psychology or a related social science field; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
- 5+ years' work experience in a role or setting serving academically motivated, diverse populations of students and families.
- Experience working on issues related to racial, ethnic, class, and gender equality in education.
- Experience designing and implementing workshops and programs.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in education, counseling, higher education; with additional coursework or background in psychology and or child and adolescent development.
- Experience as a college counselor or college admissions officer or advisor.
