Sample Management Technician I

The Sample Management Technician I manages all shipments for clinical pathology and assists in processing of samples.

Responsibilities:

  • Reviews study protocol and ensure study tasks and data for pre-clinical research studies are conducted in accordance with established protocols, SOPs, GLPs, and other pertinent regulatory requirements.
  • Independently generates study forms and worksheets.
  • Prepares and maintains a schedule for study sample shipments using internal electronic systems.
  • Prepares the shipment of study samples in accordance with local and federal regulations.
  • Provides prompt written notification to the intended recipients with tracking information and sample inventory sheets and electronic manifests.
  • Prepares sample labels using automated and manual systems and labels cups and tubes for studies.
  • Ensures adequate inventory/supplies are stocked for sample collection.
  • Reviews sample labels and specimens to assure accuracy and quality standards.
  • Operates centrifuge for collected samples in accordance with SOP and protocol requirements and places resulting serum/plasma into appropriate storage tubes.
  • Assures proper storage conditions for sample types.
  • Independently and accurately processes specimens within established metrics.
  • Maintains equipment and instrumentation.
  • Notifies Study Director of sample quality issues and documents appropriately.
  • Manages multiple studies. Learns to perform protocol review in preparation for and attends PI meetings.
  • Documents activities and records observations regarding sample preparation in accordance with GLPs, SOPs, and protocol.
  • Plans assigned workload effectively for completion of multiple assignments.
  • Ability to produce high quality data while working under the pressure of strict deadlines.
  • Recognizes deviations, determines course of action, including notifying supervisor, and documents appropriately.
  • Able to review data and identify potential problems.

Qualifications:

Education and experience

  • A high school diploma (or equivalent) with laboratory experience.
  • B.S., B.A., or A.A.S with strong emphasis in life sciences is preferred.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (i.e. Microsoft Office)

  • This position will require frequent walking, sitting for extended periods of time, carrying, standing, heavy lifting (min 50 lbs.), reaching while standing, gripping and twisting hand movements, finger control and other general repetitive motions

  • Frequent involvement with radiant/electrical energy, solvents, grease, oil, irritants, acids, bases, and other hazardous chemicals, electro-mechanical hazards, flammable materials and biohazards. Due to exposure to hazardous biological materials (which may include HIV positive specimens), immunization to diseases may be required.
  • Mantoux TB test with negative result is required or a chest X-ray to confirm no active disease
  • Able to wear latex or nitrile gloves, dust mask and/or respirator, and safety glasses as required.
  • May be exposed to animal dander and/or material associated with animal husbandry
  • The noise level is usually moderate

  • Various software applications sustained by a WindowsTM platform. (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
